Time to renew your Florida medical marijuana card? These practical tips will help you avoid gaps in access and make the renewal process smooth.

Your Florida medical marijuana card doesn't last forever. The physician certification and the state card each have their own expiration timeline, and if you let either one lapse, you lose access to your dispensary until it's sorted out.
The good news: renewal is straightforward if you plan ahead. Here are the practical tips that save my patients time, money, and frustration.
Understanding the Two Timelines
Florida's medical marijuana system has two separate components, each with its own expiration:
Physician certification (every 210 days / ~7 months)
Your certifying physician must re-evaluate you approximately every 210 days to renew your recommendation. This is a required follow-up visit where your physician reviews how treatment is going, adjusts your recommendation if needed, and re-certifies you in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry.
State-issued card (every 12 months)
Your physical medical marijuana ID card expires one year from the date of issue. Renewing the card costs $75 and is done through the Florida OMMU website.
These two timelines don't align, which means you'll have physician visits approximately every seven months and a card renewal annually.
Tip 1: Mark Your Calendar Now
Don't wait for a reminder. As soon as you receive your certification or card:
- Set a calendar reminder for 30 days before your physician certification expires
- Set a calendar reminder for 45 days before your state card expires
- The state sends email reminders, but don't rely solely on these
The physician certification expiration is the one patients most often miss, because 210 days is an unusual interval that doesn't correspond to any natural calendar milestone.
Tip 2: Schedule Your Physician Visit Early
You can renew your physician certification up to 30 days before it expires. Don't wait until the last day โ life happens, and if you can't get an appointment on your exact expiration date, you'll have a gap in access.
Schedule your renewal visit 2-3 weeks before your certification expires. This gives you a buffer for unexpected schedule conflicts.
Tip 3: Prepare for Your Renewal Visit
Renewal visits are typically shorter than initial evaluations, but they're not a rubber stamp. Your physician needs to assess:
- Whether medical cannabis is still appropriate for your condition
- How your symptoms have responded to treatment
- Any side effects or concerns
- Whether your current products and dosing are working
Come prepared to discuss:
- What products you're using and at what doses
- What's working and what isn't
- Any changes in your health since your last visit
- Any new medications you've started
- Questions about your regimen โ this is a good time to troubleshoot
If you've been keeping a symptom journal or notes about your experience, bring that information.
Tip 4: Renew Your State Card Early
You can submit your state card renewal on the OMMU website starting 45 days before your card expires. The renewal fee is $75.
Why renew early:
- Processing can take 5-10 business days (sometimes longer)
- If your card expires before the new one is approved, you technically cannot purchase from dispensaries during the gap
- Technical issues with the website occasionally delay applications
Submit your card renewal as soon as you're eligible โ there's no benefit to waiting.
Tip 5: Keep Your Profile Updated
Before renewing, log into the OMMU website and verify that your information is current:
- Address: Must be your current Florida address
- Email: Must be active โ this is where renewal notices and approval notifications go
- Photo: Your card photo should be reasonably current
Changes in address require updating your profile, and if you've moved, the card will be sent to your new address.
Tip 6: Know What a Gap in Certification Means
If your physician certification lapses (even by one day), you cannot legally purchase medical cannabis until you see your physician and get re-certified. Your existing products at home remain legal to possess and use, but you cannot visit a dispensary.
If your state card lapses, the same applies โ no dispensary purchases until it's renewed and the new card is active.
This is why planning ahead matters. A gap doesn't just mean inconvenience โ it means no access.
Tip 7: Consider Switching Physicians If You Need To
You are not required to renew with the same physician who originally certified you. If your physician has retired, relocated, or if you simply want a different experience, any Florida-registered medical marijuana physician can take over your care.
At Coral Health, we regularly see patients who were initially certified elsewhere and want to switch to telehealth for the convenience factor. The renewal process is the same regardless of who originally certified you.
Tip 8: Take Advantage of the Renewal Visit
The renewal visit is an opportunity, not just an obligation. It's a chance to:
- Discuss dose adjustments. If your current dose isn't as effective as it was, your physician can help with strategies.
- Try different products. If you've been using one product type, your physician can discuss alternatives.
- Address tolerance. If you've noticed diminishing effects, this is the time to discuss tolerance management.
- Update your recommendation. If your needs have changed โ different milligram amounts, different routes of administration โ your physician can adjust your recommendation.
Don't treat the renewal as a checkbox. Use it.
Renewal Costs Summary
| Item | Cost | Frequency |
|------|------|-----------|
| Physician renewal visit | Varies by provider | Every ~7 months |
| State card renewal | $75 | Every 12 months |
Some patients qualify for fee reductions on the state card:
- Veterans and their spouses may be eligible for fee reductions
