Getting a medical marijuana card in Florida is more straightforward than most people expect. But there's a lot of confusing information out there — outdated blog posts, misleading ads, and frankly some shady operations that give the whole process a bad reputation.
Here's how it actually works, step by step, from a physician who certifies patients every day.
Step 1: Confirm You Have a Qualifying Condition
Florida law defines specific medical conditions that qualify for medical marijuana. The list includes:
- Cancer
- Epilepsy
- Glaucoma
- HIV/AIDS
- PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)
- ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
- Crohn's disease
- Parkinson's disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Chronic nonmalignant pain
- Any condition comparable to those above, as determined by your physician
That last one is important. Florida gives qualified physicians the ability to determine whether conditions of similar severity or chronicity warrant certification. In practice, this means conditions like anxiety, chronic migraines, fibromyalgia, arthritis, neuropathy, and insomnia are frequently certified when they're genuinely affecting your quality of life.
The key word is "genuinely." A good physician isn't going to rubber-stamp anyone who walks in. But if you have a real medical condition that's impacting your daily life, and you've either tried other treatments or have good reasons to consider cannabis, you likely qualify.
Step 2: Find a Qualified Physician
Not just any doctor can certify you for medical marijuana in Florida. The physician must:
- Hold an active, unrestricted Florida medical license (MD or DO)
- Complete a state-required course on medical marijuana
- Be registered with the Florida Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU)
This is a separate certification from a regular medical license. Your primary care doctor may or may not have it. Many patients come to us specifically because their regular doctor either isn't certified or isn't comfortable recommending cannabis.
When choosing a physician, look for someone who:
- Actually examines you and reviews your medical history
- Discusses your condition, treatment history, and goals
- Explains different routes of administration and what might work for your situation
- Is available for follow-up questions
Be cautious of operations that feel like a factory — thirty-second appointments, no real conversation, just collecting payment and pushing you through. You deserve better than that, and frankly, you'll get better results when your doctor actually understands your situation.
Step 3: The Doctor Visit
Here's what happens during a typical certification appointment at our practice:
Medical history review. We look at your existing diagnoses, medications, past treatments, and what has or hasn't worked. If you have medical records, bring them — it helps, though it's not always required for the first visit.
Conversation about your condition. This is the most important part. We want to understand how your condition affects your daily life, what you've tried, and what your goals are. Are you trying to sleep? Reduce anxiety? Manage chronic discomfort? The answer matters because it affects our recommendation.
Physical examination. A focused exam relevant to your condition. This is real medicine — not just paperwork.
Recommendation and education. If you qualify, we'll discuss routes of administration (inhalation, oral, topical, sublingual), THC-to-CBD ratios, starting dosages, and what to expect. We'll also discuss potential side effects and drug interactions.
The whole visit typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. At Coral ReLeaf, we do this via telehealth for most patients, which means you can do it from home.
Step 4: Get Added to the State Registry
Once your physician certifies you, they enter your information into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR), which is managed by the Florida Department of Health. This is the official state database.
Your physician enters:
- Your qualifying diagnosis
- The routes of administration you're approved for
- The amount (in milligrams) you're allowed to purchase within a given period
You don't need to do anything for this step — your doctor handles it.
Step 5: Apply for Your Medical Marijuana Card
After your doctor enters you into the registry, you'll receive an email from the state with instructions to complete your application. Here's what you'll need:
- Proof of Florida residency (Florida driver's license, state ID, utility bill, etc.)
- A passport-style photo (you can take one with your phone)
- Payment of $75 to the state (this is a state fee, separate from your doctor visit fee)
The application is done online through the OMMU website. It's not complicated, but some patients find the state website a bit clunky. We walk our patients through it if they need help.
Step 6: Wait for Your Card
Processing times vary, but most patients receive their card within 5 to 10 business days. The state mails a physical card to your address, and you'll also have a temporary ID you can access online once you're approved.
Important: You cannot purchase from a dispensary until you have your card (or temporary approval). Don't try to walk into a dispensary before this step is complete.
Step 7: Visit a Dispensary
Once you have your card, you can visit any licensed Florida dispensary. There are currently over 400 dispensary locations across the state, operated by licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTCs).
At the dispensary, a pharmacist or patient consultant will:
- Verify your card and registry information
- Review what routes and amounts you're approved for
- Help you select products based on your doctor's recommendation
- Explain dosing for specific products
Your first dispensary visit can feel a bit overwhelming — there are a lot of options. This is where having had a real conversation with your doctor pays off. If your physician gave you clear guidance on what to start with, the dispensary visit becomes much simpler.
What It Costs
Let's be transparent about pricing:
- Doctor visit: Typically $150-$250 for the initial certification (at Coral ReLeaf, we keep this competitive)
- State card fee: $75 (paid to the state of Florida)
- Renewal: Your certification is valid for 210 days (about 7 months), at which point you need a follow-up visit. The state card itself renews annually.
Medical marijuana products at the dispensary are an additional cost and are not covered by insurance. Prices vary widely by product type and dispensary.
Common Questions
Do I need to bring medical records?
It helps, but it's not always required. Your physician can often certify based on a thorough interview and examination, especially for conditions that are clinically apparent.
Can I do the doctor visit via telehealth?
Yes. Florida allows telehealth certification for medical marijuana after an initial relationship is established. At Coral ReLeaf, we see most patients virtually.
Will my employer find out?
The Medical Marijuana Use Registry is confidential. However, medical marijuana does not protect you from employer drug testing policies — Florida law does not prohibit employers from enforcing drug-free workplace policies.
Can I grow my own?
Not legally in Florida at this time. All medical marijuana must be purchased from a licensed dispensary.
How soon can I start?
From your doctor visit to your first dispensary purchase, most patients are up and running within 2 weeks.
The Bottom Line
The process is simpler than most people think: see a qualified doctor, get entered into the state registry, apply for your card, and visit a dispensary. The whole thing takes about two weeks from start to finish.
The most important step is finding a physician who actually cares about getting your treatment right — not just processing paperwork. If you're in Florida and considering medical marijuana, we're here to help you figure out if it's a good fit for your situation.
